What is a language model?

A language model is a type of machine learning model that is trained to predict the likelihood of a sequence of words in a language. It is used in a variety of natural language processing tasks, such as language translation, summarization, and language generation.

In order to train a language model, a large dataset of texts in the language of interest is typically used. The model is then trained to predict the next word in a sequence, given the words that come before it. In this case, the model might predict "mat" as the next word with high probability, since this is a common word to follow the phrase "sat on the" in English.
